For all his fame and celebration, William Shakespeare remains a mysterious figure with regards to personal history. He was an English respected poet and playwright.

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, allegedly on April 23, 1564. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor and writer. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare’s private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality and religious beliefs.

Shakespeare wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances.

He was not of an age, but for all time. So wrote Ben Jonson in his dedicatory verses to the memory of William Shakespeare in 1623.
